Given the staggering rate of development within generative artificial intelligence models, we are confident that our AI mentor chatbot will be considered out-of-date by the time we publish our research document (April 2024). However, the Design Mentor provides a rudimentary example of the customization of an AI model for a specific service or role. We imagine, that Design Schools will develop their own, potentially proprietary AI tools, as a way to share their design knowledge with current students and alumni.
Through a simplified customGPT service, we are able to provide a glimpse into a potential future, where novice designers can interact with a digital resource that has the persona of a helpful and knowledgeable design expert.
Developing the Design mentor
In configuring the AI chatbot, we have considered the following customizations:
DATA – we have uploaded a number of publicly available PDFs that are related to the topic of our research project. In addition to this library, the chatbot also has access to GPT4 (April 2024) large language model.
CONVERSATION SETTINGS – we have configured the chatbot to be friendly and supportive during dialogues with users.The chatbot is limited to the English language.
CHATBOT PERSONA – this option has undergone the most amount of configuration, providing the chatbot with the persona of an experienced designer who seeks to assist novice designers in developing their skills and expertise. Further, the chatbot is tuned to guide mentees towards discovering solutions on their own, by offering constructive feedback that is specific, actionable, and encouraging.
Interacting with the design mentor
Given the subscription costs of the AI chatbot service, it is likely that the Design Mentor will only be available for a relatively short period of time. We intend to capture examples of typical interactions with the AI chatbot and post them within the reflections area of this website.
OPTION 1 – DIRECT LINK
We encourage novice designers to use the following combination of analog and digital services:
– Download the prompt cards for use at any time.
– Capture your thoughts regarding your experiments with the prompt cards in a physical journal or digital note-taking app.
– Interact with the Design Mentor chatbot to discuss challenging prompts and explore design concepts.
